Correlation between the inner edge of outer radiation belt electrons and the innermost plasmapause location

چکیده
[1] A remarkable correlation between the inner edge of the outer radiation belt electrons and the innermost plasmapause location is demonstrated by using 12 years of measurements of MeV electrons from the Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX) and the Combined Radiation and Release Experiment Satellite (CRRES) during its entire mission (July 1990–October 1991). An empirical model of the plasmapause location, Lpp, by O’Brien and Moldwin (2003) as well as the measured Lpp during the CRRES mission is used for the comparison. This correlation suggests that the innermost Lpp is the innermost limit of the outer radiation belt penetration. We discuss the possible scenarios that might explain this correlation. The Role of the Plasmasphere in Radiation Belt
The plasmapause separates cold dense plasma in the inner magnetosphere from hot, low-density outer magnetosphere plasma. This boundary is very dynamic in response to changes in magnetospheric convection and other stormtime phenomena. The outer radiation belt is also dynamic during stormtime in terms of both radial location and energetic particle population. It is proposed that outer radiation b...

[1] Remote sensing of the entire plasmasphere is routinely accomplished by the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) imager on the IMAGE satellite. EUVobserves the helium distribution in the plasmasphere by detecting resonantly scattered solar 30.4-nm ultraviolet radiation. In EUV images the plasmapause is assumed to be the ‘‘ He edge,’’ i.e., the outermost sharp edge where the brightness of 30.4-nm He emi...

Using data from WIND, SAMPEX (Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer), and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) sensors onboard geostationary satellites, we investigate the correlation of energetic electrons in the 20-200 keV range in the solar wind and of high speed solar wind streams with relativistic electrons in the magnetosphere to determine whether energetic electrons...
متن کاملUltra-low-frequency wave-driven diffusion of radiation belt relativistic electrons
Van Allen radiation belts are typically two zones of energetic particles encircling the Earth separated by the slot region. How the outer radiation belt electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies remains an unanswered question. Recent studies have presented compelling evidence for the local acceleration by very-low-frequency (VLF) chorus waves. However, there has been a competing theory...

Introduction: The use of electrons in the electron therapy to destroy tumoral tissue is dedicated significant contribution of different methods of radiation therapy. Scattered radiation due to exited electrons of the applicator affect the dose out of the field in the patient's normal tissue. The aim of this study is to determine the peripheral dose outside the applicator in the...
